영국 출신 SF소설의 거장이자 저명한 미래학자 아서 C. 클라크가 스리랑카에서 타계했다고 19일 해외언론들이 전했다.

　과학 소설 장르의 개척자인 그는 소설 “2001년 스페이스 오디세이(2001: A Space Odyssey)”로 널리 알려져 있고, 과학 발전의 미래를 정확히 그리고 생생하게 묘사한 탁월한 비전의 소유자이다.
　그가 통신의 매개가 되는 정지 궤도 위성을 묘사한 것은 1945년의 일이다. 현실보다 20년가량 앞서 상상을 해 냈던 것이다. 사람들을 지구 밖으로 이동시킬 우주 엘리베이터도 아서 C. 클라크가 착안한 것이다.
　1940년대 아서 C. 클라크는 인간이 2000년까지 달에 갈 수 있을 것이라고 주장했으나, 당시 전문가들은 공상으로 취급했었다. 그러나 1969년 닐 암스트롱이 달에 발을 딛었고 당시 미국은 아서 클라크가 “우리를 달로 이끈 필수적인 지적 동기를 제공했다”고 경의를 표한 바 있다.
　1968년에는 스탠리 큐브릭 감독이 2001: 스페이스 오디세이를 영화화했다. 아서 C. 클라크가 시나리오 공동 작업을 했던 이 영화는 인류의 진화와 외계 생명체와 인공 지능에 대해 비전을 제시했던 작품이다.
　2001년의 우주 탐사선 '화성 오디세이'를 비롯해 아폴로 13호의 통제 모듈 명칭은 그의 작품에서 따온 것이며, 소행성(4923 클라크)과 호주에서 발견된 공룡에도 그의 이름이 붙여져 있다.
　'유년기의 끝(End of Childhood)', '라마와의 랑데부(Rendezvous with Rama)', '낙원의 샘(The Fountains of Paradise)' 등등 100 여권의 과학 소설과 논픽션 책을 낸 아서 C. 클라크는 1956년부터 스리랑카의 수도 콜롬보에서 1956년부터 살았다. 그의 비서인 로한 데실바는 이날 "그가 심장마비로 운명했다"고 이날 공식발표했다. 향년 90세.
